Lost in the Sauce: Rules finalized to take away LQBTQ rights, cement border wall, sell oil rights
Welcome to
Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
I am doing a separate post for the insurrection and related events. I think it is important to make sure the news in this post doesn't get overlooked. Housekeeping:
- HOW TO SUPPORT: I know we are all facing unprecedented financial hardships right now. If you are in the position to support my work, I have a patreon, venmo, and a paypal set up. No pressure though, I will keep posting these pieces publicly no matter what - paywalls suck.

A new report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) found that Trump political appointees politicized intelligence around foreign election interference in 2020, resulting in significant errors. ODNI analytic ombudsman Barry Zulauf delivered the report to Congress on Thursday: “Analysis on foreign election interference was delayed, distorted or obstructed out of concern over policymaker reactions or for political reasons.” The biggest misrepresentation of intel involved diminishing the threat posed by Russia and overstating the risk of interference from China.
“Russia analysts assessed that there was clear and credible evidence of Russian election influence activities. They said IC management slowing down or not wanting to take their analysis to customers, claiming that it was not well received, frustrated them. Analysts saw this as suppression of intelligence, bordering on politicization of intelligence from above.”
- WaPo: Zulauf, a career official, also found an “egregious” example of attempted politicization of the Russian interference issue in March talking points on foreign election threats, prepared “presumably by ODNI staff” and “shaped by” then-Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell.
The Justice Department and the federal judiciary revealed that the Russian Solar Winds hack also compromised their computer systems. 3% of the DOJ’s Microsoft Office 365 were potentially affected; it does not appear that classified material was accessed. The impact on the judiciary seems much more significant, jeopardizing “highly sensitive confidential documents filed with the courts.”
The sealed court files, if indeed breached, could hold information about national security, trade secrets and wiretap transcripts, along with financial data from bankruptcy cases and the names of confidential informants in criminal cases...
Appointees
D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine has accused U.S. Agency for Global Media Director Michael Pack of funneling $4 million in nonprofit funds to his own for-profit company. In a civil lawsuit filed last week, Racine states that for over 12 years, Pack used a nonprofit company he owned to direct money to his private documentary company, enabling “Pack to line his company’s coffers with a stream of tax-exempt dollars without...a competitive bidding process, public scrutiny, or accounting requirements regarding its spending.”
Employees at Voice of America have filed a whistleblower complaint accusing Pack of using the agency “to disseminate political propaganda in the waning days of the Trump administration. The staffers take issue with a planned speech by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to be broadcast from VOA headquarters. The event, to be attended by a live audience, “is a specific danger to public health and safety” in the middle of a pandemic. Finally, the whistleblowers say the event is “ a gross misuse of government resources,” costing at least $4,000 in taxpayer funds to date and using 18 employees who would otherwise be producing VOA content.
Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller has announced his appointees to the panel set to rename confederate military bases and plan the removal of confederate symbols/monuments. Most controversially, Miller named White House liaison Joshua Whitehouse, who oversaw the purge of the Defense Policy Board and the Defense Business Board last month. The other three Miller-appointees are former acting Army general counsel Earl Matthews, acting assistant secretary of Defense Ann Johnston, and White House official Sean McLean. The remaining four members will be appointed by the Senate and House Armed Services Committees.
- The 10 Army posts named in honor of Confederate generals are Camp Beauregard and Fort Polk in Louisiana, Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in Georgia, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Lee and Fort Pickett in Virginia, Fort Rucker in Alabama, and Fort Hood in Texas.
Trump
The Trump Inaugural Committee, a nonprofit, improperly paid a $49,000 hotel bill that should have been picked up by Trump’s for-profit business. D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine revealed the allegation in an existing lawsuit against the committee, which already accuses Trump’s hotel of illegally pocketing about $1 million of donors’ money. “The Trump Organization was liable for the invoiced charges...The [Committee’s] payment of the invoice was unfair, unreasonable and unjustified and ultimately conferred improper private benefit to the Trump Organization.”
The Professional Golfer’s Association voted last night to move the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump’s Bedminster course. Jim Richerson, PGA of America president, said in a statement that “it has become clear that conducting” the championship at Trump’s property would “be detrimental to the PGA of America brand” and put the organization's ability to function "at risk."
Amid speculation that Trump may spend inauguration day at his Scottish golf course, Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned him that even presidents can’t break the country’s pandemic restrictions. “We are not allowing people to come into Scotland now without an essential purpose, which would apply to him, just as it applies to everybody else. Coming to play golf is not what I would consider an essential purpose,” she said.
Trump is on a Presidential Medal of Freedom spree, giving out the award to sports figures and Republican allies. Last Monday, Trump awarded the medal to Rep. Devin Nunes for his work undermining the FBI’s investigation of Russia’s election interference. “Devin Nunes’ courageous actions helped thwart a plot to take down a sitting United States president,” the White House press release states. Likewise, Trump gave the medal to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for his “effort to confront the impeachment witch hunt” and “exposing the fraudulent origins of the Russia collusion lie.”
- The day after Trump supporters rampaged through the Capitol, Trump awarded the medal to retired professional golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player. The president planned on giving New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick the medal on Thursday, but he declined the offer, saying that “the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.”
Courts
Dominion Voting Systems filed suit against pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell for defamation. Powell falsely claimed that Dominion had rigged the election, that Dominion was created in Venezuela to rig elections for Hugo Chávez, and that Dominion bribed Georgia officials for a no-bid contract,” the lawsuit states. Citing millions spent on security for employees, damage control to its reputation, and future losses, Dominion requests damages of more than $1.3 billion.
- Dominion's lawyer told reporters last week the lawsuit against Powell “is just the first in a series of legal steps.” Ari Cohn, a free speech and defamation lawyer, told WaPo: “If I had to guess I would say that [Poulos] wants a very public vindication with a ruling establishing that Sidney Powell defamed them and that her statements were baseless...That's not something you generally get in a settlement agreement.”
- Just last week, Trump again said at a rally that Dominion machines allowed “fraudulent ballots” to be counted during the 2020 election (clip).
The Supreme Court declined to fast track eight Trump-related cases related to the 2020 election, ensuring they won’t be taken up before Biden’s inauguration. The cases include one brought by attorney Lin Wood against Georgia’s Secretary of State, the so-called “Kraken” cases, and three brought by Trump’s campaign. It is possible the lawsuits will be declared moot after Biden is sworn in.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear two cases alleging that the Treasury Dept. incorrectly distributed Coronavirus aid meant for tribal governments. The Lower 48 Tribes argue that Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) are not eligible for CARES Act funding, while the Trump administration wants to divvy up the money between tribes and ANCs.
Immigration
A federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s final attempt to restrict U.S. asylum laws. District Judge James Donato (Obama appointee) ruled in favor of advocacy groups who argued that acting Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf lacked authority to impose the new rules, which would have resulted in the denial of most asylum applications.
“The government has recycled exactly the same legal and factual claims made in the prior cases, as if they had not been soundly rejected in well-reasoned opinions by several courts,” Donato wrote. “This is a troubling litigation strategy. In effect, the government keeps crashing the same car into a gate, hoping that someday it might break through.”
On Monday, acting Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf submitted his resignation, citing the recent court ruling that he is not a valid appointee to the position. His resignation letter does not cite the Capitol riots or Trump’s language inciting the insurrection. FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor will be the new acting secretary.
"Unfortunately, this action is warranted by recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary. These events and concerns increasingly serve to divert attention and resources away from the important work of the Department in this critical time of a transition of power," Wolf added.
A new Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy will make it harder for immigrant minors to obtain asylum in the U.S. The change was made at the end of last month by then-acting agency leader Tony Pham, who served in the position for less than five months.
Beginning Dec. 29, ICE officers were told that they must review whether an immigrant child is still “unaccompanied” each time they encounter the minor… The memo indicates that the evaluation by ICE officers can come at any time, including when an officer is reviewing immigration court records of a child, and if it’s determined that an immigrant is no longer unaccompanied, they will move to change their status.
Such a change could lead to making some children ineligible to have their asylum claims initially heard and processed… “If implemented aggressively, this policy could significantly decrease the number of children who ultimately receive asylum in the United States,” said Sarah Pierce, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute. “They are really putting the onus on ICE officers to do everything they can as frequently as they can to remove these designations.”
The Trump administration is still awarding border wall contracts, even in areas where private land has not yet been acquired. The move will make it more difficult for Biden to stop construction of the border wall.
Attempts to halt construction completely, as Biden promised, will prove difficult, particularly if contracts continue to be struck -- a challenge [acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark] Morgan acknowledged Tuesday. "They could terminate those contracts if they want to, but that's going to be a very lengthy, messy process," Morgan said.
"We're going to have to go into settlement agreements with each individual contractor," Morgan added, noting, that payments will have to be made for what they've already done, as well as for materials produced. He estimated the process could cost billions.
Trump is set to visit Alamo, Texas, today to celebrate the completion of more than 400 miles of the border wall. You can watch the event on YouTube at 3:00 pm eastern.
Miscellaneous
Stories that didn’t fit in the above categories...
The Trump administration auctioned off leases to drill oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge last week. Only two private companies bid, each winning large tracts of land. Knik Arm Services, from Alaska, paid $1.6 million for a 50,000-acre tract along the Arctic Ocean. A subsidiary of Australian company 88 Energy paid $800,000 to win the smallest tract.
One of the Health and Human Services Department’s final acts under Trump was finalizing the removal of Obama-era regulations barring discrimination among HHS grantees. The change will allow recipients of federal grant money - like adoption and foster agencies - to discriminate against LGBTQ people and those of a different religion.
Human Rights Campaign: “Statistics suggest that an estimated two million LGBTQ adults in the U.S. are interested in adoption… Further, research consistently shows that LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system, as many have been rejected by their families of origin because of their LGBTQ status, and are especially vulnerable to discrimination and mistreatment while in foster care. This regulation would only exacerbate these challenges faced by LGBTQ young people.

Marvel 1670-Spiderman
Now, if you have not seen the first one, search up Marvel 1670-Daredevil to get more context being stuff. Anyways:
Spider-Man 1670:
Origin: Born in 17th century New England to English spy parents, Peter has always had a troublesome childhood. His parents died on a shipwreck and thus he had to move to 17th century NYC to be taken care of by his Uncle and Aunt. He went to various prestigious schools and a good high school. He was enrolled in the best University in NYC at that time. And during his university days, his life would change. He had a friend named Øsborne who was the son of a wealthy Norwegian business man who owned Øsborne co. (A company which traded goods with Europe) One day, Peter was invited to one of the many warehouses that Øsborne owned to help with some work. It turns out Øsborne had ordered for various exotic spiders be shipped from another continent. And when Peter opened the crate holding them to make sure that the orders were in check, he fell into the crate of spiders and got bitten by a hundred of them at once. The unique mix of venoms transformed Peter. He learned he had powers the following day and used them for his own selfish purposes. Ie. he became a wrestler. When his Uncle Ben was killed by a fleeing robber and the police department did nothing about it, he decided to use his powers for the good of the people. And that’s when he became ”The spider”
Powers and abilities: He essentially has the same abilities. Superhuman strength, speed, durability etc..... He also has the lesser known ones. Like accelerated healing and ofc, has a spider sense.
Facts: A “new“ segment, that i actually just forgot to include in the Daredevil thread so......... yeah.
Anyways, Spider-Man 1670 is very similar in many ways to his modern counterpart: For example:
He uses rope shooters instead of web shooters, these shoot out braided rope made of synthetic rope fibers that Peter made himself
Similarly to the modern Peter, the synthetic rope shooters were originally a marketing idea for a stronger rope that could withstand more and thus, be used on ships
like the modern peter, who uses all his money on stuff to produce the webs, 1670 Peter, uses all of his money to pay for rope fibers to help him make rope.
He has various suits, like the modern peter. He has one which is the equivalent to the electro proof suit. The 1670 “electroproof“ suit is made of South American Rubber which Peter highly experiments with. He has a suit which is infused with armor too.
His fighting style in the 1670 world is something he made himself, and it is a mix of capoeira which was thought to him by 1670 miles morales and Bare knuckle fighting.
He similarly to Peter has a high IQ, though (Modern) Peter has 250 and he has 180+ which means that he has the same IQ as Galileo Galilei. And Einstein only had 160, yeah. Though that does not make his feats any less impressive than modern Peter. He started reading and writing when he was 3, and started creating wooden gizmos and machines at 9 (In the 1670 universe) As well as being a Math and science Wiz.
He has had various jobs, in the 1670 universe, he has been a chemist/scientist, teache professor, newspaper publisher, food delivery man (Yes, cooking guilds delivered foods to the wealthy)
He has had various love interests. Like: 1670 Black cat, Betty brant, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy (Both who he met in college)
He actually needed spectacles before the spiders bit him. Like his modern counterpart.
He has a cobwebs under his armpits...... Similarly to classic Peter
He was raised (When outside of New England) In Forest hills, New York Just like Modern Peter.
He makes puns, quips and flyting as a coping mechanism for when he is in a fight (Yes, puns did exist back then, and were actually used a lot by William Shakespeare) and, (Flyting is something of Scottish origin that made it’s way to New York, it is actually the ancestor of the modern rap battle, using intricate wording and verses to make fun of people)
He, similarly to his modern counterpart, is called a Freak, but instead of directly calling him a freak, he is referred to as a ”Geck/Geek” Which back then, meant fool or Freak.
Villains:
Venom 1670:
Origin: Venom was summoned by a secret guild of occultists in 1500s NYC. It killed the occultists and by the time it was the 1600s, it had been in New York for years. Edison Brock, a news paper publisher was possessed by Venom. He gained vast abilities. Superhuman strength, speed and durability/stamina. He could cling to walls, fly, use telekinesis, hydrokinesis, use black magic, sense when someone has died, manipulate souls, and though it takes a toll on his body, he can shapeshift, he can teleport, summon/manifest weapons like axes, chains or swords. He can travel through dimensions that open portals. Emit pheromones that cause creatures of darkness to come to him and they will automatically attack any being of light around him. He can also control their specific actions. BTW these creatures of darkness include: Bats, wolves, bears and even worms. He can also preform energy transfers with these creatures of darkness to boost his abilities, he can become invisible, his suit can protect Edison even while he is unconscious or sleeping. He can also create matter, mentally link with beings, has telepathic abilities, can speak to Mother Nature and even just go outside of his power set if he wishes to. But that is only when his suit has enough units of energy. He can manipulate hellfire, has a penance stare, he can even transfer evil energy from evil humans, or suck it right out of a with bad people. He also has magical abilities. And is functionally immortal. He can manipulate time, memories, pain and even death. He also has an accelerated healing factor and can heal the sick and preform miracles using his units of energy. He can also hypnotize people and is also somewhat invincible. Though he does have one glaring weakness, if his head is cut off, or a loud sound is emitted, it can literally cause both Edison and the suit to die. One of the hardest choices, this version of Spiderman will have to make.
Sandman 1670
Origin:
He was born in Queens New York, abandoned by his father at only 3 years old, he grew up with his mother. In these years, he was taken to Coney Island beach (Yes, beaches and sun bathing were very much a concept) Where he would make sand sculptures. (Yup, they existed and sand castling was very popular) He was so good at this, that it inspired a fighting technique for him in high school. Now, he essentially has the same backstory, gambles away, starts going deeper into a rabbit hole of illegal activity, etc.... He ends up in a prison in Georgia, where he meets his father. His father is released and Marko escapes to be with him, he ends up fleeing to a naturally radioactive beach. This morphs his body with sand and he becomes, a creature molecularly made up of sand. He has the same abilities, and is able to infinitely to anything he wants with sand. Be it, create structures and constructs, or fill peoples lungs with sand so that they cease to breathe.

He did crazy things, like pushing children into wells, killing and torturing cats, he even randomly slaughtered sheep. When he grew up, he killed his Grandma, which then caused him to be transferred to a mental asylum in New York. He stayed there for some of his years, but then decided to escape. He ran into the woods where he was possessed by a symbiotic organism. The offspring of Venom. That, was the start of Carnage. Now, this version of Carnage has a demon influenced power set. He has access to another dimension and the countless legions of darklings that dwell there. He can create constructs and summon other worldly beings to serve him, his suit is somewhat invincible, and significantly augments his strength, speed, endurance etc.....He can break stones, chains, and even send grown men flying across the room with the slightest touch. He can move at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, he can change his appearance, to mimic the look and voice of others, he can even take the form of dragon-like creatures. He can remain energized indefinitely without getting tired. The suit even supplies him oxygen, allowing him to survive underwater, in gas filled rooms and low oxygen areas. He can create anything he desires, from physical constructs to sentient beings. He can even teleport via shadows.

He was so obsessed with becoming an actor that he started to see being a back scene worker as one of the lowest forms of work one could have. His attempts to become an actor were, well, poorly received. But then he realized that his expertise in effects, magic lanterns (one of the oldest types of “Film“ technology) and illusions would make him a great criminal. He decided to form an identity and engineered a suit with various mechanisms. He created a mask with retro-reflective eyes, a gas mask-like device, boots with springs which allowed him to leap impressively, a claw like substance which allows him to stick to walls, a gas that causes paralysis for 30 minutes, hypnogens and various hallucinagens, various hidden nozzles that can release streams of smoke to mask his movement, he can mix various chemicals into his smokescreen for various effects, he has hidden nozzles in the emblems of his shoulders which release gasses, an abrasive to eat away at the Spider’s rope, a built in magic lantern to project various images onto objects for various effects, he has a gas which dulls and inhibits the Spider’s spider sense, his cape is also shorter this time to prevent people from pulling it.

He had to stay away from light, drink blood to survive and gained various abilities. He joined a touring circus on their trip to America, specifically New York, where he preformed various acts as a circus freak. After serving his country, he returned to civilian life as a technologist, and became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of reptilian limb regeneration. Working from home, in his countryside villa, he finally managed to concoct a potion made with Reptilian blood/DNA. The potion regrew the missing limb of a rabbit and so he decided to test it on himself. The potion regrew his amputated limb, but had one big glaring side effect. It turned him into a humanoid lizard. He has superhuman abilities/Superhuman strength, speed, stamina etc.. and he can also slightly mentally link with reptiles, but this is limited. He can secret powerful pheromones that cause nearby humans to behave violently, he has sharp claws, a muscular jaw with sharp teeth and a strong bite, microclaws that allow him to cling to geometry, he also has accelerated healing and a tail which he can use as a weapon.

Anti-Corruption Nov/12/2018: a vast network of fake news launches a smear campaign; gov-funded museum director caught embezzling millions; Yerevan administration demolishes illegally built buildings; Latest news about military; Sports champions return home; (read more below...)
Over 300 fake social media accounts have begun a character-assassination campaign against the Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan, after the latter audited the St. Gregory Illuminator hospital and discovered that Serj Sargsyan's relative (director) allegedly abused his powers to steal massive amounts of funds from the state. The fake accounts use pictures from people living in other countries to spread misinformation about Torosyan, and are believed to be tied to the director's son, according to FIP.
...other, more popular media outlets that spread misinformation about him, were the Armenia TV, Iravunk paper and politik.am website. The latter earlier accused another Pashinyan cabinet member of smoking marijuana and breaking the law in his office. The cabinet member agreed to take the case to court (and subsequently give a blood sample for analysis). NEWS.am has also spread misinformation about Health Minister's father, then purchased ads to promote the inaccurate article on the social media.
https://fip.am/4726?fbclid=IwAR2kZVYcodotU-qdYGNWdYTCltR0ISHT8A1h6WWAUi8vqAhlR2X71cTtLPU ... analitik.am was caught spreading misinformation about March 1st events, by deliberately presenting events partially, to defend the HHK and Kocharyan regimes. They also incorrectly claimed that Levon Ter-Petrosyan was calling for the military to join them on 2008, while in reality he said (recorded on video) that he called the military to make sure they don't take actions against the protesters.
https://fip.am/4857 ... aysor.am, slaq.am and iravunk.am have spread misinformation by twisting Informed Citizens Daniel Ionessyan's words to make it appear as if he believes the old administration were more transparent than QP. This was regarding the Hrazdan pre-elections story in which IC employee (most likely by breaking the law) set up a bait to wiretap a conversation with a school director to see if the latter would abuse his powers
https://fip.am/4879 Robert Kocharyan’s close ally has bought Ararat TV and half of the shares of Panorama.am and Aysor.am news sites
http://www.armtimes.com/hy/article/148265 (Note: FIP.am is managed by Informed Citizens organizations run by Daniel Ionessyan.)
Government-funded Lori Pambak museum director is charged with embezzlement of AMD 7mln, after NSS sends information to the local police. She is accused of registering 8 non-existent people as employees to steal their salaries, as well as taking a bribe from several employees to falsify their work experience records
http://www.armtimes.com/hy/article/148273 Serj Sargsyan and his right-hand man Karen Karapetyan won't participate in the upcoming Parliamentary elections. The HHK list will be headed by the former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan, who has just been elected as the vice-president of HHK (Serj is the president, Karapetyan was the former vice-president).
https://armenpress.am/arm/news/954107.html The Pashinyan administration has reduced the country's debt by $143.2mln since taking the office
https://factor.am/98072.html PM Pashinyan says the politicians at the top of their party lists should hold live public debates during the election cycles. Doesn't rule out that this could become part of the Constitution in future.

http://www.armtimes.com/hy/article/148281 The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Mane Tandilyan will participate in the upcoming elections as part of Bright Armenia party, which is run by QP ally Edmon Marukyan
https://armenpress.am/arm/news/954187.html The Parliamentary Economic Committee is discussing the formation of a bill which could further limit certain types of gambling. The author of the bill, QP Alen Simonyan, wants a clause that will allow the wife to prevent the husband from wasting the family funds on gambling by taking the case to court and prohibiting him from using the family funds in gambling institutions. There are 62k regular gamblers in Armenia, out of whom 2k are highly addicted. A HHK member is concerned that any drastic measures to limit this type of gambling could harm jobs. Simonyan says they plan to limit the foreign online gambling websites to limit money leaving the country, and to require that these websites check that the person is above 21.
... another clause of the bill will outlaw gambling (bookmaker) centers in Yerevan or any other similar city where casinos are already banned. The players would need to go to the outer suburbs, like they do today, to play in casinos.
... gas stations will be prohibited from having gambling machines.
... another HHK member is in favor of completely banning bookmaker gambling centers across Armenia.
... the Economic Committee has given a negative opinion to this amendment to the law. It will be discussed further in the Parliament.

Can a Child play on a Slot Machine if the Slot Machine has no money?[US]
I use to play on a Slot Machine at a Action house down in Georgia until someone complained ether to my Parents or the Owners that it was Illegal for me to do so.And while I am fully aware of Underage gambling laws was this true or was that person overreacting? All I was doing was putting quarters in and playing just to play as I said it was empty.

From SI Article on 2019 Draft Class: “unless you have the first or second pick, this might not be the best year to be high in the draft order.”
If you root for the Jets or the Bucs or the Browns, or another team hovering on the fringes of prime draft position, you may be tempted to root for some post-Thanksgiving losses. In some years, especially those with bumper crops of quarterbacks coming, there’s real validity to the idea. Our advice to those good people: Don’t bother, not this year.
That doesn’t mean that the 2019 draft is bereft of talent. It’s not 2013 or ’15 at the top, and it does have depth that, as scouts see, should last into the fifth round. It’s just that, unless you have the first or second pick, this might not be the best year to be high in the draft order. Evaluators across the league will tell you: When it comes down to it, this is one of those years where there isn’t much separating the fourth pick from the 14th.
“The first round is full of land mines,” says one veteran AFC exec.
“This is not a top–10 type of draft,” adds an AFC college scouting director. “To me, there are a lot pass rushers and D-linemen, but I don’t know that there’s anyone that compares to, say, Bradey Chubb, if you take [Nick] Bosa out of it.”
That sets the backdrop for you. This year’s class is light on the skill positions, and heavy on defensive linemen, with a shaky group of quarterbacks mixed in. How do the players stack up right now? With the help of some veteran evaluators, we here's our first Big Board of the year...
- Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio State
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 265 pounds The true junior was the best player in America through three weeks of this season before shutting it down. Assuming he checks out physically coming off his core muscle surgery, he’s the leader in the clubhouse to be the No. 1 prospect going into pre-draft process.
- Quinnen Williams, DL, Alabama
Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 295 pounds Williams didn’t start for the Tide in 2017. A year later, he has a shot to go in the Top 5, which is a good example of how the Nick Saban Machine rolls. And while it may seem a little off to see him ranked higher than Ed Oliver, the disruptive Williams is more scheme versatile than his more ballyhooed counterpart.
- Ed Oliver, DT, Houston
Height: 6' 2" | Weight: 290 pounds Oliver has missed the last three weeks after taking an illegal low hit to the knee against Navy, and his status is up in the air for tomorrow’s home finale against Tulane. That said, he’s still the guy who was drawing comparisons to John Randle over the summer. And while not every team loves him (will he come in at 280 or 300 pounds?), for some, he projects as a foundational type player.
- Devin White, Stack LB, LSU
Height: 6' 0" | Weight: 240 pounds Positional value being what it is, I doubt White—an off-the-ball linebacker—goes this high. But he’s a very good player who could be the nerve center for an NFL defense for a lot of years. He’s a better athlete than last year’s top inside ’backer, Roquan Smith, but isn’t quite as instinctive or productive as the Bears rookie was at Georgia.
- Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 280 pounds The crazy thing about Gary is that he’s still seen as being pretty raw with a lot of room to grow. And at 280 or so pounds, the buzz is that he’ll run a 40-yard dash in the 4.7s. He may not be the best of the defensive linemen in this class as a rookie, but has the potential to be a monster long-term.
- Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 265 pounds Ferrell has picked up where he left off last year. He has 17 sacks in his last 19 games, and is very natural as a pass rusher, both in his build and how he plays.
- Josh Allen, OLB/DE, Kentucky
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 255 pounds The biggest question on Allen is how an NFL team will wind up using him. Like Minnesota’s Anthony Barr and Buffalo’s Tremaine Edmunds, he can play on the line or off, and can do a lot of things well. He’s been productive this year, with 11 sacks, 15.5 tackles for losses, five forced fumbles and four pass breakups.
- Jeffrey Simmons, DT, Mississippi State
Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 300 pounds His background will be a topic of discussion in February and March; as a high schooler he pleaded no contest to simple assault after striking a woman several times during a fight. Conversely, those in Starkville have vouched to NFL teams for the kind of person Simmons has been over his three years on campus. On the field, he’s capable of ruining games from the interior.
- Greedy Williams, CB, LSU
Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 185 pounds He’s tall and skinny, and isn’t perfect for everyone. But the Seattle-style Cover-3 defense teams will love him, and, of course, he comes from a school with great lineage at his position.
- Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia
Height: 5' 11" | Weight: 185 pounds Scouts will tell you that Baker is probably a better cover guy than Williams. The problem? He’s about four inches or so shorter than Williams.
- Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson
Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 315 pounds Wilkins is a freakish athlete who some project to contribute a little on offense in the NFL too, with his natural bend, change-of-direction ability, body control and ball skills. The question will be, as an attacking, upfield type, where he finds his home on defense in the NFL.
- Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson
Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 350 pounds Lawrence is a little antithetical to Wilkins—just a massive body with strength and athleticism to clog up the middle for a defense. The Tigers defense deploys him aggressively, but in the NFL he’ll likely find his value as a brick wall of a run defender.
- Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
Height: 6' 5" | Weight: 230 pounds Lots of scouts will tell you he’s staying in school, and that he wants to play with his younger brother, who arrives on campus next year. As naturally gifted as Herbert is, he could use a little work—his accuracy has leveled off after a hot start to the season. All that said, given the position he plays, and how it’s drafted, staying in school would probably be a pretty serious gamble.
- Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
Height: 6' 5" | Weight: 300 pounds Williams started at right tackle as a true freshman in 2016—not an easy trick to pull off—before flipping to play the left side last year. He’s in the running for all the postseason honors a lineman can contend for. The question in the pros will be whether he has the traits to play left tackle, or if he’d be better suited to play on the right side or inside.
- Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 325 pounds He’s a little like Lawrence—athletic enough to have third-down potential, but mostly just a gigantic dude who will be a problem for opponents in the run game. He’s listed at 325 pounds, and at 20 years old, he’s got room to grow.
- Montez Sweat, DE/OLB, Mississippi State
Height: 6' 5" | Weight: 250 pounds Another pass-rusher in a class full of them, Sweat is a tall and angular pressure player who will probably go just behind his teammate Simmons.
- Raekwon Davis, DL, Alabama
Height: 6' 6" | Weight: 315 pounds Davis is different than his teammate Quinnen Williams—much more the big, strong, hold-the-fort type who’d fit right in as a 5-technique in a 3-4 front. And he does have a longer tracker record than Williams too, which does say something since the two were competing for playing time.
- Dre’Mont Jones, DT, Ohio State
Height: 6' 2" | Weight: 290 pounds Another product from the pipeline of Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, Jones is scratching the surface of his athletic potential, and has size and burst as a disruptive interior rush man.
- Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
Height: 6' 1" | Weight: 195 pounds Thompson, like Williams, has emerged with increased playing time, and proven to be an instinctive and quick centerfielder of a safety. The big issue with him scouts have – he’s pretty skinny.
- Devin Bush, Stack LB, Michigan
Height: 5' 11" | Weight: 230 pounds What Bush lacks in size he makes up for in instincts, speed and intensity. One of the best defensive playmakers in the country, and a linebacker who will need the right fit schematically to thrive in the NFL.

article link So what’s our bigger need? OL like Jonah Williams or one of the Clemson DT? Beasley makes me want to shy away from the latter.
